Looking to spruce up your home? Not sure what to ask your painting contractor? We have put together a few questions to ask your painter or potential painters before work begins on your project. These questions should give you peace of mind that your project is in the safest hands.
1 – Are the painters your employees or a subcontractor?
Some large painting contractors will outsource their work to smaller companies. Whilst this may not be a problem for you, it is always good to know who will be completing the work, especially if the work is in your home. The team at Adelaide Premier Painters do not subcontract as we believe in doing things right the first time and we believe completing the projects ourselves allows us to ensure our quality standards are maintained.
2 – Are you fully insured and licensed?
Imagine one of the contractors or yourself are injured or property damage is caused during the painting process, it’s imperative that the painting contractor has the appropriate insurance, including compensation and public liability. You are also able to ask the painter to provide proof of appropriate licencing, such as Working at Heights Licenced. This is probably one of the best pre-screening questions to ask, as if the contractor does not have the appropriate licences and insurances, it’s time to move on to the next contractor.
3 – Do you provide a warranty on your work?
Most companies, from cars to cleaners provide a warranty on either the parts or labour involved in a project. Warranties are covered under certain legislation but it’s always a good idea to check with the painter before they start. Not only does it show the painters confidence in their work, it protects you should the work not be up to standard or if it should fail or be damaged in anyway. A contractor who is unwilling to provide a warranty on their service, may be one to avoid.
4 – How long have you been operating in the area and do you have any other areas you operate in?
Asking the contractor how long they have been in business allows you to gauge their professionalism and quality of workmanship. If a company has been operating for a long time or even has multiple locations, it is a good sign that they have been performing well over the years.
That doesn’t mean to say you should discount any contractor who doesn’t have a lengthy time in the business.
5 – Are you able to help me choose the best colours for my property?
If you’re not sure what colours would work on your home or business, it is always a good idea to do some research or to ask the experts. It’s not critical that every painter be able to provide advice on the best colours for your project, but a painter who can will make your project a lot less expensive. Picking the wrong colour may not seem like a big deal, however a painter should be able to provide advice on heritage colours and requirements, if applicable, as well as what has been popular or works well in the area.
Hopefully these handy questions help you find the right painter for your project.
